Hendersonville Secures $3.5 Million State Grant for Extensive Park Enhancements

City's Investment and Land Value Contributions Elevate Total Project to $5.9 Million

The city of Hendersonville has been awarded a substantial $3.5 million grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Office of Outdoor Recreation, aimed at enhancing several local parks.

With the city's additional $2 million contribution and the valuation of designated land, the total investment in these projects reaches approximately $5.9 million.

These funds will facilitate significant improvements across multiple parks, including Drakes Creek Park, Sanders Ferry Park, Veterans Park, Memorial Park, the Rugby Field, and Mallard Point Park.

Planned enhancements encompass:

Drakes Creek Park: Renovation of concession stands, improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and upgraded turf fields.

Sanders Ferry Park: Installation of an inclusive playground, new pickleball courts, a walking loop, repaving efforts, and basketball court renovations.

Veterans Park: Introduction of new field turf, paving projects, and enhanced accessibility features.

Memorial Park: Upgrades to LED lighting systems for tennis courts.

Rugby Field: Paving of existing gravel parking lots and access roads, along with improved accessibility.

Mallard Point Park: Replacement of the existing boat ramp and dock, parking lot paving, and accessibility improvements.

House Majority Leader William Lamberth, Majority Whip Johnny Garrett, State Representative William Slater, and Senate Speaker Pro Tempore Ferrell Haile jointly emphasized the importance of accessible recreational opportunities, stating, "Every investment we make in our parks is an investment in the well-being and future of our citizens."

Hendersonville Parks Director Andy Gilley expressed enthusiasm about the grant, highlighting the city's commitment to enhancing its parks system and acknowledging the support from local and state officials.

The Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) program, through which these grants are administered, aims to support local governments in developing and improving recreational facilities and natural areas.

Hendersonville is among 31 communities statewide to receive such funding this year, underscoring the city's dedication to providing quality recreational spaces for its residents.

In addition to these developments, the city is hosting the Summer Songwriter Series at Sanders Ferry Park on July 19, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm CDT.

This event offers an evening of outdoor family fun and showcases original music from Nashville's emerging talents.

Attendees can enjoy food trucks, local craft beers, and activities for children, making it a perfect community gathering.

Admission is $10 for guests aged 13 and up, while children under 13 can attend for free.

For more details, residents are encouraged to visit the city's official website or contact the Parks Department directly.

These initiatives reflect Hendersonville's ongoing efforts to enhance community engagement and provide inclusive recreational opportunities for all residents.
