Tennessee State Veterinarian Dr. Samantha Beaty is urging animal owners to be aware of New World Screwworm (NWS), a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, causing painful infected wounds.

The pest was eradicated from the U.S. decades ago but recent detections in Mexico raise concerns about reintroduction.

Livestock and pet owners should inspect their animals for signs of NWS, such as wounds that won't heal, foul-smelling discharge, or unusual behavior.

Early detection is crucial for containment and treatment.

Owners moving animals across borders should ensure proper inspection and documentation.

Suspected cases should be reported promptly to the State Veterinarian's office or USDA.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture Animal Health Division can assist with sample collection and submission.
