Sumner County residents are experiencing higher natural gas bills, with Gallatin Public Utilities pointing to colder weather and spiking wholesale gas costs as the main causes.
During the recent cold snap and ice storm, local usage soared by about 40% as temperatures plunged below freezing for nearly two weeks, pushing heating needs higher.
At the same time, the price GPU paid for natural gas climbedâfrom $3.51 per dekatherm last year to $4.47 in January, and further to $7.46 in February.
Because bills reflect real-time market prices, some January usage was charged at Februaryâs elevated rate, increasing totals.
This is a market-based price adjustmentânot a utility-approved rate hikeâwith costs fluctuating monthly.
March gas costs have since dropped to $2.97 per dekatherm, so customers should expect relief on upcoming bills.

Every so often in real estate, a story unfolds that reminds us why this work matters.
A longtime client set their sights on a newly built home, eager for a fresh start near town.
Timing wasnât on their side. As the listing launched during the slowest holiday market in years, resulting in few showings and mounting uncertainty.
As January ended, their dream home slipped away when another offer triggered a 48-hour clause.
The loss stung, even though the family had done everything right. But real estate is full of surprises.
Within a week, another ideal house appeared, and it was just steps from their family.
Soon after, an unexpected buyer emerged for their old farmhouse, someone with personal history in the home.
What felt like heartbreak soon revealed itself as redirection. This move became about community and support, which was far richer than square footage.
Once again, the process proved itâs bigger than houses. Read More... |
