NFL Veteran Returns to Alma Mater to Inspire Sumner County Youth |
Golden Tate, an eleven-year NFL wide receiver and Super Bowl champion, returned to Pope John Paul II Preparatory School (JPII) in Hendersonville, TN, on Monday to lead an athletic skills clinic for local youth.
The two-hour event featured first-year Knights head coach Roc Batten, his coaching staff, JPII players, and Tate himself, who amassed over 4,000 yards and earned two Mr. Football awards during his high school career with the Knights.
After high school, Tate signed with Notre Dame and was later selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, where he won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014.
Throughout his NFL career, Tate accumulated 8,278 receiving yards and 47 touchdowns, playing for the Seahawks, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants.
In recent years, Tate has re-engaged with JPII, restarting his skills camp in 2023 alongside initiatives like the Tate Scholars Fund and an annual coat drive.
His younger brother, Wesley Tate, a former football standout, is part of the school's strategic planning committee and has served on its board of trustees.
JPII continues to make strides in athletics, with the football team participating in the 2024 Division II Class AA State Football Playoffs.
Additionally, the school was recognized as the winner of the 2024 Sumner County Main Street Award for Private High School.
Hendersonville offers a variety of youth athletic opportunities through its Parks Department, including partnerships with local organizations to provide leagues in soccer, baseball, softball, and more.
These programs aim to foster a love for sports and community engagement among the city's youth.
