Heat Advisory Issued for Sumner County: Stay Alert to Heatstroke Risks

Residents Urged to Take Precautions as Heat Index Soars

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Sumner County, Tennessee, effective from 11 AM Monday, July 21, to 8 PM Wednesday, July 23.

During this period, heat index values are expected to reach up to 108°F, posing significant health risks to residents.

High temperatures combined with elevated humidity levels can lead to heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke.

It's crucial to recognize the signs and symptoms of heatstroke to protect yourself and others.

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of heatstroke include:

High body temperature: A core body temperature of 104°F (40°C) or higher is the primary indicator.

Altered mental state or behavior: Confusion, agitation, slurred speech, irritability, delirium, seizures, and coma can all result from heatstroke.

Alteration in sweating: In heatstroke brought on by hot weather, your skin will feel hot and dry to the touch.

Nausea and vomiting: You may feel sick to your stomach or vomit.

Flushed skin: Your skin may turn red as your body temperature increases.

Rapid breathing: Your breathing may become rapid and shallow.

Racing heart rate: Your pulse may significantly increase because heat stress places a tremendous burden on your heart.

Headache: Your head may throb.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition.

If you suspect someone is experiencing heatstroke, call 911 immediately.

While waiting for emergency assistance, move the person to a cooler place and cool their body rapidly by immersing them in cold water, dousing them with cold water, or covering them with cold, wet towels or ice packs.

To prevent heatstroke, the American Red Cross recommends the following tips:

Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.

Eat small meals and eat more often.

Avoid extreme temperature changes.

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Slow down, stay indoors, and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.

Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.

Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone, or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.

Ensure they have water and a shady place to rest.

By following these guidelines, residents of Sumner County can stay safe and healthy during this heat advisory.
