Natural gas bill increases in Sumner County, TN explained |
Gallatin Public Utilities factors affecting your recent statements |
Residents in Sumner County have recently noticed a significant uptick in their natural gas bills.
Gallatin Public Utilities (GPU) attributes this surge to two primary factors: a substantial increase in consumption during the prolonged cold snap and a temporary spike in the wholesale cost of natural gas.
During the recent ice storm, customer usage escalated by approximately 40%, as the region endured nearly two weeks of below-freezing temperatures, naturally leading to higher heating demands.
Concurrently, the wholesale price of natural gas experienced a sharp rise.
In January, GPU purchased natural gas at $4.4687 per dekatherm, up from $3.514 per dekatherm the previous year.
February's market price further increased to $7.46 per dekatherm.
Since natural gas billing is based on the market rate at the time of billing, some January usage was billed at February's higher rate, contributing to the elevated bills.
It's important to note that this is not a rate increase approved by the utility but a rate adjustment reflecting the actual cost of purchasing natural gas, which fluctuates monthly based on market conditions.
To maintain system reliability during the peak of the cold snap, GPU exceeded its contracted supply due to unusually high demand and had to purchase additional gas at elevated market prices.
While GPU collaborates with a third-party marketer to forecast monthly usage based on historical data and weather projections, the extended duration of the recent freeze surpassed typical modeling assumptions.
On a positive note, natural gas prices are cyclical.
For March, GPU purchased natural gas at $2.97 per dekatherm, and customers should see lower costs reflected in upcoming bills.
By purchasing gas at market prices instead of locking customers into long-term fixed contracts, GPU aims to take advantage of lower prices when they occur, ultimately saving money for customers and taxpayers over time.
