Community Celebrates Inclusive Playground at Peay Park |
Goodlettsville's Peay Park now boasts a remarkable addition: Rachel's Garden, an all-inclusive playground designed for children of all abilities.
The grand opening drew a large crowd, with families and community members gathering to celebrate this milestone.
Inspired by Rachel West, daughter of retired Fire Captain Ricky West, the playground addresses the need for accessible play spaces.
Rachel, a lifelong Goodlettsville resident, has faced challenges accessing traditional playgrounds due to mobility limitations.
Her experiences highlighted the importance of creating a space where children, regardless of ability, can play together.
In 2016, the Goodlettsville Fire Department's Kid's Christmas Charity initiated efforts to fund this project.
With land provided by the city and a matching grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation's Office of Recreation, the community raised nearly $1.7 million.
Notably, half of this funding came directly from local citizens and businesses, showcasing the community's commitment.
Spanning over 20,000 square feet, Rachel's Garden stands as one of Middle Tennessee's premier inclusive playgrounds.
It offers a destination where every child can play, grow, and belong.
The playground features state-of-the-art, turf surfacing, ensuring safety and accessibility for all users.
Play components are designed to accommodate a full range of abilities, both physical and cognitive.
From wheelchair-accessible gliders to sensory-friendly equipment, the design promotes inclusive play.
Rachel expressed her excitement, stating, "I like the ability to move my chair up next to my nieces and nephews."
This sentiment echoes the playground's mission to foster connections among all children.
Located at 200 Memorial Drive, Rachel's Garden is adjacent to the Delmas Long Community Center and the splash pad, enhancing Peay Park's offerings.
The playground's completion marks a significant achievement for Goodlettsville, reflecting the city's dedication to inclusivity and community engagement.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to experience Rachel's Garden and witness firsthand the joy it brings to children and families alike.
