After an illustrious 45-year tenure as District Attorney General for Sumner County, Ray Whitley has announced his retirement, effective September 1, 2025.
Whitley, Tennessee's longest-serving district attorney, began his legal career in 1971 following his service as a U.S. Army captain in Vietnam.
He initially served as a federal prosecutor in Nashville before joining Sumner County as an assistant district attorney in 1978.
In 1980, Governor Lamar Alexander appointed him as District Attorney General, a position he has held through six subsequent elections.
Reflecting on his career, Whitley stated, "When I first took on this role, I could never have imagined the journey ahead—the challenges, the triumphs, the heartaches, and the hopes. It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your District Attorney General."
Throughout his tenure, Whitley has been instrumental in prosecuting thousands of violent offenders and initiating programs targeting drug abuse and victim advocacy.
He served twice as president of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference, influencing statewide criminal justice policies and legislative efforts.
Sumner County Sheriff Eric Craddock praised Whitley's legacy, noting, "General Whitley's retirement marks the close of a remarkable chapter in Sumner County's history. His decades of service have been defined by a tireless pursuit of justice, an unwavering commitment to the rule of law, and a steady presence in our courts."
Whitley expressed deep gratitude to his team and law enforcement partners, stating, "Our shared commitment to justice has made a real difference in this state, and I am profoundly proud of all that we've accomplished together."
As Sumner County prepares for this transition, the community reflects on Whitley's enduring impact and the foundation he has built for future leaders in the pursuit of justice. |
