The Tennessee Department of Transportation's (TDOT) Nobody Trashes Tennessee campaign has launched its 5th Annual No Trash November, a month-long statewide effort aimed at removing 75,000 pounds of litter from Tennessee's roadways and waterways.
Residents of Sumner County are encouraged to participate by joining or organizing local cleanup events to help achieve this ambitious goal.
In recognition of this milestone, Governor Bill Lee has proclaimed November as No Trash November Month in Tennessee.
Communities across the state, including those in Sumner County, are coming together to support and host cleanup efforts throughout the month.
Since its inception in 2021, No Trash November has mobilized thousands of volunteers through over 480 cleanup events, resulting in the removal of nearly 250,000 pounds of litter statewide.
In 2024 alone, more than 2,400 volunteers participated in over 175 cleanup events, collecting a total of 69,000 pounds of litter.
TDOT Commissioner Will Reid, P.E., expressed pride in the community's dedication, stating, "As we mark the fifth year of No Trash November, I'm proud of the unwavering commitment Tennesseans have shown in safeguarding the natural beauty of our state."
He emphasized that litter prevention is crucial not only for maintaining clean roads but also for protecting Tennessee's land, water, and wildlife.
The initiative collaborates with various organizations, including Keep Tennessee Beautiful affiliates, Litter Grant recipients, Adopt-A-Highway groups, and youth organizations such as Girl Scouts and Scouting America.
Residents are encouraged to join existing public cleanup events or host their own.
Progress toward the 75,000-pound goal can be tracked online through the No Trash November Trash Tracker.
Groups collecting the most litter will be recognized in categories such as Keep Tennessee Beautiful Affiliate and Litter Grantee, Adopt-A-Highway Group, Youth Group, and Water Group.
Participants can also engage in the Trash Masters Rewards program, where Tennesseans aged 13 and older earn points for their litter prevention efforts.
Activities like attending cleanup events, completing litter prevention quizzes, and spreading awareness contribute to point accumulation.
These points can be redeemed for discounts at local businesses and exclusive Nobody Trashes Tennessee merchandise.
This year, TDOT introduced a new patch featuring mascot Rocco the Raccoon.
Scouts and youth groups across Tennessee can earn this limited-edition patch by participating in litter cleanups, recycling projects, or other community beautification activities.
