Sumner County Schools Board Debates 'Christmas Break' vs. 'Winter Break' Naming |
Board members clash over December break terminology ahead of upcoming vote |
In a recent Sumner County Schools board meeting, a spirited debate emerged over whether to designate the December recess as 'Christmas Break' or 'Winter Break' in the upcoming academic calendar.
Historically referred to as 'Winter Break' since at least 1994, the board voted last year to rename it 'Christmas Break.'
Now, some members are advocating for a return to the original terminology.
Board member Wade Evans initiated the discussion, citing feedback from constituents who feel the current name may exclude non-Christian students.
He emphasized the importance of inclusivity, noting that only one out of sixteen neighboring counties uses 'Christmas Break' in their calendars.
“At the end of the day, we’ll be fine and we’ll move forward in the community,” Evans stated.
Supporting Evans, board member Meghan Breining argued that the board should not impose a faith-based designation on the entire community.
She stressed the need to ensure that no child feels excluded due to the break's naming.
Conversely, board member Andy Lacy opposed the change, asserting that the term 'Christmas' reflects the truth and should not be altered to avoid offending others.
He questioned the necessity of changing the name back to 'Winter Break.'
In an attempt to find a middle ground, board member Tammy Hayes proposed presenting two versions of the calendar—one with 'Winter Break' and another with 'Christmas Break'—for the board's final vote.
The board is scheduled to make a decision on the calendar in their upcoming Tuesday meeting.
This debate underscores the broader conversation about inclusivity and tradition within the Sumner County community.
As the board prepares to vote, residents are encouraged to share their perspectives to help shape a decision that reflects the values and diversity of the district. |
