TDOT Announces Nighttime Closures for I-65 Bridge Construction in Sumner County |
Motorists Should Prepare for Detours and Delays as Crews Set Steel Beams |
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is set to commence nighttime closures on US-31W (State Route 41) and Interstate 65 in Sumner County, beginning Sunday, November 16.
These closures are essential for the installation of steel beams on the new I-65 bridge over US-31W, a significant milestone in the ongoing infrastructure enhancements in the region.
Starting at 8 p.m. on November 16, crews from Jones Bros. Construction will implement lane closures on both I-65 and US-31W in both directions.
The work is scheduled to occur nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. over approximately 12 nights, with an anticipated completion date of December 4.
Motorists should be aware that this schedule is subject to change based on work progress and weather conditions.
The planned closure schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, Nov. 18: I-65 northbound inside lane closure; US-31W northbound closed.
Wednesday, Nov. 19: I-65 northbound closed over US-31W; US-31W both directions closed.
Thursday, Nov. 20: I-65 southbound inside lane closure; US-31W both directions closed.
Sunday, Nov. 23: I-65 southbound inside lane closure; US-31W both directions closed.
Monday, Nov. 24: I-65 northbound inside lane closure; US-31W both directions closed.
Tuesday, Nov. 25: I-65 northbound closed over US-31W; US-31W both directions closed.
Monday, Dec. 1: I-65 southbound closed over US-31W; US-31W both directions closed.
Tuesday, Dec. 2: I-65 northbound inside lane closure; US-31W southbound closed.
Wednesday, Dec. 3: I-65 northbound inside lane closure; US-31W southbound closed.
TDOT emphasizes that this schedule may be adjusted as work progresses.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about potential changes.
Detour signage will be prominently displayed to guide drivers through the affected areas.
During full closures of I-65 over US-31W, traffic will be diverted off the interstate at the US-31W exit ramp and re-enter via the I-65 entrance ramp.
For US-31W closures, recommended detours will be clearly marked to facilitate smooth traffic flow.
These closures are part of the broader Phase 3 of TDOT's I-65 improvements project, which commenced in March 2025.
This phase aims to enhance capacity and efficiency along a 3.4-mile stretch from near State Route 41 in Sumner County to near Rivergate Parkway in Davidson County.
The project includes adding an additional travel lane in each direction, widening the corridor from four to six lanes, and replacing eight bridges.
Notably, the US-31W interchange will be transformed into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), a design intended to improve traffic flow and safety.
TDOT awarded the Phase 3 contract to Jones Bros. Construction, the same contractor that successfully completed Phase 2 of the I-65 improvements in Robertson County ahead of schedule.
The current project is expected to be completed by November 30, 2027, with financial incentives in place for early completion and penalties for delays.
As construction progresses, TDOT urges drivers to exercise caution, reduce speed, and allow extra travel time when navigating through work zones.
Adherence to the Move Over Law, which requires motorists to move over for stopped emergency vehicles, is mandatory.
Violations can result in penalties of up to 30 days in jail and fines up to $500.
For the latest updates on construction activities and traffic conditions, motorists can consult TDOT's SmartWay Map or call 511 for travel information.
Additionally, TDOT encourages the public to report potholes by calling the TDOTFIX Hotline at 833-TDOTFIX or using the online maintenance request form.
By staying informed and planning ahead, drivers can navigate these temporary closures with minimal disruption.
These infrastructure improvements are designed to enhance the long-term safety and efficiency of the I-65 corridor in Sumner County. |
