The Hendersonville City Council adopted a $68.6 million budget that maintains a tax rate of 52 cents/$100 valuation while increasing water and sewer rates by 8 and 9 percent, respectively. Downtown parking rates remain at $2/hour. The budget reflects goals set by council members during a budget retreat in February, focusing on public safety, infrastructure, housing, growth management, and parks investment. Priorities include resiliency and recovery after Hurricane Helene, affordable housing, emergency response planning, and flood mitigation. City residents had minimal input during a public hearing, with praise for city personnel and objections to certain aspects of the budget. The budget adds eight new employees in various departments and is driven by increasing health insurance costs. Despite cost increases, the city was able to maintain the tax rate due to city growth. City Manager John Connet expressed pride in the budget's ability to provide a 4 percent cost of living increase for employees and merit increases averaging 2.56 percent, which he believes to be a leading figure in the region. The budget also includes investment in critical infrastructure and emergency services. |
